“In the Moonlight” is my latest painting. It is mixed media (acrylic paint and a sticky mesh, repurposed from XFasten‘s drywall repair mesh fabric) on canvas, 16″ x 20″ (W x H).
I started this painting with a loose sketch of a lady with a big poofy dress. I wasn’t sure what to do with her hands. Both up towards the sky? Out to the side? Down along her body? One up, one down?

At this point, I decided I wanted the dress to be angled at the bottom, and so I sketched another variation. I finally decided she needed to reach for something, keeping her on tippy-toe. Here in my final sketch, I have a star in her outstretched hand.

I also gave her a full sun/moon to look at to give the image another dimension. It gave her an overall purpose, besides just randomly standing tippy-toe out in the middle of nothing.
You know I’m all for trees, but a tree in this setting would’ve been awkward.
Here is an almost-finished version.

The moon looks decent. I kept her hands and feet abstract. Why not? Also, because I am not great at drawing or painting hands or feet.
Yes, I intend to practice hands and feet in the future. Something to go with my “noses” painting. 🙂

As for the mesh – I bet you were wondering – it was already adhered to the canvas. It was a prior project that I never finished, mostly because I am not that great at painting a total abstract painting.
I went ahead with using the mesh for this girl instead of using a cleaner canvas because… another “why not?”
And maybe she’s dancing, instead of reaching for something. I wasn’t thrilled about the star thing, so I nixed that.
The final version:

And, finally, for the final touch I streaked golden raindrops down the mesh.
I would love to hear what you think! Leave me a comment below!
Thank you for reading.
