Ten Great Ways to Spark Your Imagination in Art

Blogging is tough sometimes. Especially when you don’t think you have anything to contribute.

Today I am going to list 10 things to help awaken your muse.

Ten Things to Awaken Your Muse:

1. Search Google.

Google Images, especially, contains thousands-millions of images, including photos, references, illustrations, and other’s art. Just type in a search word or phrase, click on the Images tab, and scroll away. However, you must be careful not to infringe on any copyrights.

2. Search Pixabay.

Pixabay conveniently lets you know which images are free to use, and which limit your use to pay or note the contributing artist. There are many thousands of images you can use for free, however.

3. Search your own photo albums.

Remember the dozens of photos you took on your last vacation? Or the many sunsets you’ve captured because there are no two alike? You own the rights to those images – just be careful about copyright laws pertaining to certain landmarks or other big-name icons (Disney comes to mind).

4. Turn one image into something completely different.

For instance, I used an image of a waterfall to create this drawing. All it takes is a little squinting and a splash of imagination to turn a still life bowl painting into a beautiful pond, as another example.

5. Look out your window.

Then paint what you see. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, but working your fingers may bring back your shy muse.

6. Doodle.

As with number 5, above, getting your hands moving on something may spark a perfect idea.

7. Take a vacation.

It doesn’t have to be a 10-day cruise. Go to the park, or just walk around your neighborhood and look at other ideas of beauty (or neglect) on your neighbors front lawn. A different view than your own four walls, plus a little exercise, can do wonders for stirring your imagination.

8. Read.

Read a book. Peruse the newspaper. Read about your favorite interests on your device. Your imagination takes cues from words as well as other images.

9. Mix up your media.

You’re a painter? Try drawing, instead. Sculptor? Write a poem or song lyrics, or listen to your favorite music. Changing up your tried-and-true method of art to something you’re not especially good at is a great way to look at things from another side.

10. Take a break.

Ok, so you’ve been in your “dungeon” for four days straight and your mind is melting? Stop! Stop doing any form of art for awhile. As with number 7, change up your scenery. But don’t think about your art. Everyone needs a break from work, and sometimes your art feels like work.

I’ve taken you through ten great ways to nudge your muse. However, this list is far from complete.
